Program Description:

This study tour, offered to eligible students from the BVO/MVO programs, provides the first opportunity in our program’s history to undertake an intensive tour of the vineyards and wineries of the west coast of North America. Throughout the tour you will hear from local industry practitioners about the challenges they face, their approaches to grape growing, winemaking and wine marketing to local and international consumers. The key regions to be visited on the tour include the Napa, Sonoma and San Joaquin Valleys (California), the Willamette Valley and Columbia Gorge (Oregon), Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills, Red Mountain and Yakima Valley (Washington).
The tour will be an opportunity to discover unique vineyards, wineries, and cellar doors and to excite the senses with extensive tastings. Most of the travel will be via coach allowing us to take in the spectacular scenery of these regions. During the trip we will also visit one of the key ‘wine’ universities in North America and students will have opportunities for some sightseeing and down-time around San Francisco, and Seattle. Assoc. Prof Grbin and Dr Beth Loveys will be your hosts for the study tour.


This program runs from Saturday 21 September to Sunday 6 October, 2019.

Program Fee
The program fee for this study tour is expected to be AU$5,418.

This program fee includes all internal US flights, ground transport, accommodation, ground transport, site visits, some meals, staffing, risk management support.
Students will need to cover their own international airfare and some meals in addition to the above program cost.

Please note that University of Adelaide tuition costs also apply for the enrolled course SCIENCE 3500 - Science International Study Tour or SCIENCE 7550 - Science International Study Tour (PG)

Eligibility and Selection

The tour will be open to 3rd and 4th year undergraduates in the Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology and post graduates in the Masters of Viticulture and Oenology. All applicants must be 21+ years old by September 21, 2019.

Those students wishing to apply for OS-HELP must have completed at least 24 units which need to be recorded on their transcripts at the time of application and must have at least 3 units of study to complete on completion of this study tour. The tour is limited to 16 students.

Selection of participants will be made on the basis of student response to the GLAS questionaire.

  • Tour leader will shortlist applicants based on application responses.
  • The Faculty of Sciences will conduct a degree check for each shortlisted student and approve the student for credit. This is an automatic internal process and students do not have to take any action for this to occur.
  • After the Faculty of Sciences has completed the degree check, students will be notified of their application outcome by Study Overseas.
  • Students will be required to pay a AUD$500 deposit within 14 days of their selection for this program. This deposit will be paid by the Online Shop and managed by the student's Faculty.

Academic Credit

Once selected for the program, students must enrol in SCIENCE 3500 - Science International Study Tour or SCIENCE 7550 - Science International Study Tour (PG).

Please note that the usual tuition fees still apply for the enrolled course, in addition to the program fee listed above.

Students selected for this program will receive 3 units of credit.

  • Students will be merit-selected for this program. Applications will be assessed on the following:
    • Applicant’s answers to the ‘About Me’ Questionnaire in their GLAS application
    • Relevant courses that the applicant has already completed (as specified on the applicant’s University transcript)
