Program Description:
NCP Samoa
Experience a tropical paradise in the heart of the Pacific during a New Colombo Plan funded Dean’s Elective. Four AUD$3,000 New Colombo Plan (NCP) mobility grants are available for eligible students to fund this program.  
Based in Apia, Samoa’s capital, this Dean’s Elective allows you to choose from a variety of disciplines in a Samoa’s main hospital, giving you a greater understanding of the Samoan Healthcare system. You will work alongside senior medical staff, assisting with patient care and management while increasing your clinical skills and learning about prevalent diseases and impacts of NCDs in the local population. You’ll also have the chance to visit other islands through work in mobile clinics and smaller hospitals serving rural populations.
While in Apia, you’ll live with a host family, giving you a local’s perspective of Samoan and Polynesian culture and society. 
Fully supported by Projects Abroad, your placement arrangements, accommodation and meals, in-county transport, and airport transfers are included in the program fee.  Projects Abroad will also provide 24/7 access to in-country support staff and comprehensive pre-departure support.

To be considered for a funded place on the program, students must a) meet New Colombo plan eligibility requirements b) apply for this program to the University of Adelaide by August 19, 2018 c) Students selected for this program must apply directly to Projects Abroad once they are made aware of their successful application.

This program runs over multiple dates;

Semester 1 Selective: Dean’s Elective 1,2,3,4 or 5 (students allocated Dean’s Elective 4 will participate in this program during Mid-year break: 3 June – 28 June, 2019)


Semester 2 Selective: Dean’s Elective 6,7,8,9 or 10


The program fee for this study tour is AUD$3,447.00

The program fee includes; placement arrangements, accommodation, meals, in-country transport, airport transfers, Pre-Departure support and preparation.

The program fee does not include; international and domestic flights, vaccinations, spending money and visas (Projects Abroad will provide full visa advice and support).


Four eligible students who are selected for this program will receive a grant of AUD$3,000 through the New Colombo Plan (NCP) mobility grant scheme.

Students receiving credit or recognition for this program are eligible to receive AUD$500 thanks to the Global Learning Travel Grant.

Eligible students may access up to AUD$7,998 from an OS-HELP loan.

Comprehensive Travel insurance is provided free of charge by the University of Adelaide for students receiving credit for this program.

Your application will be assessed on the quality of the answers you provide in the ‘Study Tours: About You’ questionnaire. Students must complete their application by the deadline: August 19, 2018.
  • Students will be informed if their application has been successful by September 5, 2018.
  • Successful students will be required to apply directly to Projects Abroad and pay an AU$495 deposit on application. Students may be required to pay this deposit before any of the above financial assistance is processed by the University of Adelaide. 
  • Additionally, students travelling to Samoa will need to include in their application to Projects Abroad; an up to date CV, a copy of your passport, a letter from the Head of School for visa purposes.


This program is open to final (sixth) year MBBS students only.


Students must enroll in MEDIC ST 6000A and MEDIC ST 6000B.
