City Experience Freiburg 2019

Applications have closed for this program. The details listed below are for information only and may be subject to change in 2020.

Cities are important centres of creativity, diversity and transformation. Growth and change is often highly contested and policies can have surprising outcomes as they are taken up in un/anticipated ways. Beyond buildings and infrastructure, our city experiences are shaped by the people who live in those cities and the different ways they make their city. Our study tour explores the German cities of Freiburg and Berlin. We investigate how national politics and local activism shape the spaces, fabric and experience of these cities. In Freiburg, we take a closer look at the City’s reputed progressive politics and the intersection of social justice and environmental sustainability in urban and regional planning, housing, services and infrastructure. In Berlin, our attention turns to the re-fashioning of the city, from the early twentieth century to the present day. We examine how national politics and identity become embedded in the spatial organisation and daily enactment of the city. Considering its status as the German capital, we explore how the implementation of specific policies on creativity, sustainability and migration are playing out in Berlin.
