Program Description:

The NYC Jazz Study Tour is designed to provide jazz students with an introduction to the jazz experience in New York City. Students will attend performances at most of the significant jazz clubs such as The Village Vanguard, Smalls, Jazz Standard and Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in the Lincoln Centre. Students will visit important historical jazz venues and locations, like the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, the Williamsburg Bridge (where Sonny Rollins famously practiced for months on end), and ‘feel the vibe’ where some of our most hallowed recordings were made. We will walk the streets and suburbs that the heroes of the music walked and visit iconic locations connected with the jazz canon in song and in folklore. We will visit some of the leading jazz education institutions such as the Manhattan School of Music and participate in workshops with leading jazz educators. The study tour will give the students a glimpse into the level of expertise expected to achieve a place at one of these prestigious music institutions and to be able to survive in the hyper competitive NYC jazz scene from our former colleagues who are living it right now.  Students will hear some of the leading performers in jazz today, and some of the best up-and-coming talent from across the world. New York City is unquestionably the world’s most exciting city for jazz but the students will also experience some of the general culture of New York, visiting galleries, museums and jazz clubs and historical jazz sights.
